Course aims
To explore and practice research methods in relation to the constraints of actual workplaces, thus enabling students to gain first-hand experiences on the applicability and feasibility of particular methods beyond lab research.
Brief description of the course
Review of cost-effective approaches and methods for data gathering in the field. Overview of contextual constraints for conducting applied research in industry. Course consists of a series of seminars in the first half of the semester where students are expected to be actively involved. In addition every student must conduct an individual field research project.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can differentiate between different types of data gathering methods and their respective advantages and disadvantages in the field;
- knows the main contextual constraints of applied HCI research;
- can set up research questions and choose appropriate methods according to constraints in the field;
- can design simple instruments for data collection and monitoring progress;
- can effectively report field research results.
