Course aims
To explore and practice research methods in relation to the constraints of actual workplaces, thus enabling students to gain first-hand experiences on the applicability and feasibility of particular methods beyond lab research.
Brief description of the course
Review of cost-effective approaches and methods for data gathering in the field. Overview of contextual constraints for conducting applied research in industry. Course consists of a series of seminars in the first half of the semester where students are expected to be actively involved. In addition every student must conduct an individual field research project.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- applies cost-effective and context-sensitive research methods to investigate user needs and practices in real-world environments;
- designs and conducts an independent field research project, adapting methodological choices to workplace and industry constraints;
- collaborates effectively with peers in seminar discussions to evaluate, compare, and critique research methods used in applied settings;
- operates under uncertainty and resource constraints to propose feasible, evidence-based research outcomes that address contextual challenges.
