Course aims
The aim of the course is to make students understand Open, Big and Linked Data: nature, different types of data and policies. The course provides them with common approaches to Data. With these objectives, the course introduces the main characteristics of Data and provides examples of how to make use of Open Data published by public institutions. The course also describes the Open Data policies in Estonia in comparison to other European countries.
Brief description of the course
The course is intended to be multidisciplinary. All students, who are interested in Open Data, with or without technical background, are welcome.
Students will be introduced with some basic conceptual tools regarding Big, Open and Linked Data. They will participate in hands-on practice sessions using Open Data and analyze a case of a public institution published Open Data in a groupwork. Working groups of 2-3 members will present their work in seminars and also also provide feedback on the work done by other groups.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the concepts associated with Open, Big and Linked Data;
- is aware of the ongoing Open Data initiatives in Estonia and other European countries;
- is able to understand how Open Data can be exploited by third parties;
- has improved the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, the critical thinking or the presentation of ideas in oral and written formats.
