Course aims
The course aims for explaining psychological aspects in processes and methods of interaction design. The course supports future designers in understanding the psychological aspects of the human factor while using an interactive system. Considering human needs, conventions, preferences, cognitive capabilities, motivations, emotions and social influences on users' behaviour, enables creating systems that are for example commercially more successful, easier to use, safe, trustworthy and pleasurable.
Brief description of the course
The course consists of eight topics. First four about psychological phenomena and the following four about application of the former in interaction design:
1. senses, perception and attention;
2. cognition – conscious and unconscious;
3. emotions and decision making;
4. experience and user experience;
5. mental models, human as information processor;
6. gulfs of execution and evaluation;
7. embodied cognition, embodied interaction;
8. gestalt principles.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- considers psychological phenomena in human interactions with technology;
- evaluates human factor in use of interactive systems;
- designs interactive systems by optimising psychological factors.
