Course aims
To learn how to apply basic aesthetics values and concepts, such as composition, colour, contrast, typography, pictograms and imagery in relation to User Interface (UI) Design elements. To understand Visual semiotics in different contexts and learn how to apply them depending on the topic and scope of the project. To learn the rules of composing a coherent Design System for UI and practice it by building one themselves.
Brief description of the course
User Interfaces, that are more aesthetically appealing, provide better User Experience and enhance functionality with attractive layouts. During this course students will learn the basic of visual aesthetics and how to apply them in UI design. They will learn the concept of Design System, semiotical meaning of interface components and their combinations, and how interface elements change depending on a context.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the concept of user interface, can distinguish and use UI elements and components depending on a context;
- understands basic principles of visual aesthetics such as colour, contrast, typography and composition and can apply them in UI design;
- understands the importance of accessibility, introduced and has gained basic knowledge about WCAG guidelines;
- understands the principles of building a coherent design system for a certain project and, during the course, has gained the practical experience of building one.
