Course aims
To give an overview of the concepts of game-based learning, its different forms, ways of application and constraints; to introduce the most important game components and mechanisms.
Brief description of the course
The essence of games. Game elements: action, objectives, rules, ways of interaction, time, reward, feedback, game world, levels, storyline. Game design.
Applying game-based learning: needs, types, fields, opportunities and constraints. Assessment in game-based learning. Game consoles (Nintendo Wii, Kinect for Xbox 360, Sony Playstation Portable). Virtual game environments.
Independent work:
To design an educational game (in teams): idea, rules, action, characters, game world, storyline.
To develop a game (in teams): its settings, characters, objects, game logic in eAdventure environment.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has as an overview of educational games in one’s field;
- can combine commercial and educational games with the aims of different subject lessons;
- can effectively apply appropriate games in the classroom;
- can integrate game elements while designing one’s own course;
- can design simple educational games (from idea to prototype).
