Course aims
To introduce innovative mobile technology devices; to introduce different theories, strategies and methods of how to integrate m-technologies in the classroom; to give an overview of different software and hardware solutions connected to m-learning; to learn to plan and conduct lessons of m-learning (how to select a suitable device, how to set ojectives, what programmes to download and how to do it all safely).
Brief description of the course
M-devices and programmes: this module concentrates on available hard- and software for classroom use. Downloading programmes (Android, Apple, Microsoft stores). Smartphones, tablet computers, GPS-devices, PDAs. Evaluation of apps. Using BOYD (bring your own device) approach in the classroom.
Independent work: to make a miniproject (with a budget) (as group work) about different mobile devices that should be available at school (in accordance with the national curriculum).
Theoretical module of m-learning: m-learning methods, learning theories, m-learning research, recommendations of teachers, some tips and tricks. Using QR codes, augmented reality, different apps and GPS in the classroom.
Independent work: to plan a subject lesson based on m-learning; to introduce it to one’s co-students in the practice module.
Practice module of m-learning: writing a user manual and task description for m-learning, conducting an m-learning lesson. Roleplays, simulations, exploratory m-learning and outdoor learning opportunities. Assessment in m-learning.
Independent work: to give an overview of 10 learning apps, methods and ways of assessment (according to a certain subject) that can be used with students from different age groups. All the ideas will be used to compile an m-learning guidebook.
M-safety module: mobile viruses, data protection, security lock, identity protection, mobile crimes, tchnical ways to protect oneself, WiFi security. Debate on the topic: m-learning at school - yes or no?
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can use a mobile device;
- has an overview of different mobile devices and appropriate software that can be used in the classroom;
- can make a miniproject in order to obtain and use m-learning devices;
- has an overview of e- and m-learning opportunities in the national curriculum and can set up learning objectives accordingly;
- can create a user manual of a mobile device, task description and assessment rubric for his/her m-learning lesson;
- understands the issues of m-safety and can guide his/her students in safer use of mobile devices.
