Course aims
To develop skills for the creation, retrieval, evaluation and use of information with the help of digital devices; to provide basis for understanding the importance of media literacy and its main principles; to develop skills for planning and organising media education in basic school.
Brief description of the course
Digital literacy: its concept and components. Digital media content, ICT competencies and their development. Probable effects of media, media ethics. Analysis of multimedia elements based on the standards of critical thinking. Media and pedagogy: relations, possibilities. Information need, information retrieval strategies and tactics, information resources, critical evaluation of information, use of information, citation, distribution, copyright law.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the concepts, context and components of media literacy;
- knows the main principles of media usage and its possibilities in the classroom; can create different learning tasks based on media content;
- can analyse, intepret, discredit and apply different types of media, can critically evaluate information;
- can distinguish and apply different strategies of information retrieval;
- can formulate effective information enquiries in electronic systems;
- can select and use appropriate information resources;
- knows the main rules of citation and information use;
- knows several information organisation and distribution programmes and can use these at beginner’s level.
