Course aims
To get a systematic overview of the nature and history of Gnosticism as a religious movement from later antiquity.
Brief description of the course
Gnosticism is a term, which is nowadays linked to everything esoteric and myterious. In religious science Gnosticism is a specific religious movement, which was founded and spread during a specific period in a specific geographical area - during the first centuries AD in the empire of Rome. This movement had many links to Jewish religion, Christianity and other religions in the Roman empire. This course gives a thorough overview of Gnosticism.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of Gnostic literature and sources on Gnosticism, the history of studying Gnosticism and different theories on the origins of Gnosticism;
- is able to understand the main teachings and beliefs of Gnosticism.
