Course aims
To offer a general perspective of Turkish literature, and exploring the aesthetic and semantic world of Turkish culture with classic literary texts. To provide an idea about art, poetry and literature between 13th and 19th centuries in the Middle Eastern World.
Brief description of the course
This course offers an introduction to the field of:
- periods of Turkish literature (from beginning till now)
- languages and alphabets used in these periods
- important works of these periods and examples of texts
- Ottoman Turkish, simple reading and writing
- pyhsical design of texts (miniatures, ornamentation, cover, binding, calligraphy)
- philosopy of the poetry, sufizm, mysticism
- analysing couplets

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- will gain a general perspective on Turkish literature and have general information about the period of Turkish literature, the languages and alphabets used, the significant works given and the contributions of these works to the Turkish language and literature;
- will gain familiarity and critical understanding of a number of texts and genres of Classical Turkish literature, covering the 13th and 19th century.
