Course aims
The student will be able to orientate in the history of European philosophy, its main concepts and problems. Also they will be acquainted with the main figures and schools of philosophy.
Brief description of the course
The History of European Philosophy introduces students to central ideas and thinkers from the pre-Socratics until Nietzsche. It is by no means a comprehensive discussion of all philosophers, but an overview of certain thinkers who represented the thinking of their times. The course is intended to complement Political Philosophy (6222). As such, the emphasis of the History of European Philosophy course is on metaphysics, epistemology and ethics and leaves political questions to Political Philosophy. In addition, the lectures prepare philosophy students for two subsequent courses: 20th century continental philosophy (6216) and 20th century analytic philosophy (6215). A package of course readings with selections from various philosophers can be purchases at Koopia kolm (Vana-Viru 3). Please bring the course packet to class.
