Brief description of the course
The course introduces different forms and practices of ethnographic representation in anthropology, focusing on how anthropological knowledge is produced, communicated, and interpreted through texts, films, photographs and other visual materials, and museums. The course addresses questions of representation, authorial position, and interpretation in different historical and social contexts. Through lectures, seminars, and practical assignments, students develop their ability to analyse and create anthropological interpretations in visual, material, and textual forms.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- analyses the representation of anthropological knowledge in different ethnographic forms, such as films, photographs, museums, and monographs;
- critically interprets representational choices, taking into account their historical, cultural, and social contexts;
- compares the possibilities and limitations of different ethnographic forms in representing cultural diversity;
- collaborates with other students to create a small-scale visual, material, or textual anthropological representation addressing a socially, culturally, or environmentally relevant problem or question identified by the group;
- presents and reflects on their interpretations in oral, written, and visual form, using disciplinary English and providing a rationale for the representational choices made.
