Course aims

Brief description of the course

Baltic German culture and Estonia; post-war German cultural history; comparison of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; post-war Germany and its influence on contemporary discourse; 1968 and its legacy; German reunification; Austrian neutrality and cultural identity; German-speaking Switzerland; collective memory and sites of memory; intercultural communication and interpretation of cultural symbols.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the main developments of cultural spaces and social processes in contemporary German-speaking countries;
- understands major social developments since 1945 and their representation;
- has an overview of historical connections between Germany and Estonia;
- reflects on their role as a cultural mediator;
- applies cultural knowledge respectfully and analytically in communication;
-develops intercultural competence through analysis and comparison of cultural phenomena.
