Course aims
Introduction to the main concepts and problems of Spanish linguistics today. The course focuses on contemporary developments of Spanish and on the relationship between language and society.
Brief description of the course
The course deals with current developments in Spanish linguistics. This includes sociolinguistics (language and social status, age, gender); dialectology (urban-rural confrontation, traditional and modern methods for studying national and regional language use); Eco linguistics (including its use by minorities and migrants, the role of Spanish as a foreign language); the role of Spanish in the world (Spanish as a pluricentric language); the relationship between language and ideology in a globalizing society. The course has a seminar format and actively involves the learner.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the relevant linguistic terminology and has an overview of the development and functioning of modern Spanish in different countries;
- is capable of analyzing and evaluating the factors that intervene in the consolidation of a language standard;
- promotes, through linguistic knowledge, attitudes of respect, consideration and appreciation towards other languages, towards other dialectal varieties and towards different cultural values;
- is able to connect their linguistic knowledge with broader cultural contexts and analyse linguistic phenomena;
- integrates the new methodologies in the study of linguistic diversity;
- takes advantage of the resources of the network and the techniques of collecting materials for the elaboration of didactic materials for the teaching of Spanish;
- has improved their Spanish language skills, both spoken and written;
- has developed pair and group work skills.
