Course aims
To generate discussion on important topics in the society and culture of Spanish-speaking countries, to develop the ability to read critically theoretical sources, to support independent research and the ability to apply knowledge in practice.
Brief description of the course
The course allows the student to understand the cultural differences and similarities in Latin America and Spain. The students deepen the ability to use their sociocultural competence in the analysis of contemporary social problems and their coverage in culture and media. The seminars deal with aspects of the culture and society of Spanish-speaking countries (such as human rights, democracy, climate change, migration, multilingualism, indigenous communities' rights, identity).
The course has a seminar format and actively involves learners; it also encourages learner autonomy by providing learners with the tools and opportunities they need to find their own development path. The discussions are supplemented by the reading of theoretical literature, and the use of audio and video materials.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has deeper knowledge in cultural differences and similarities with a focus on Latin America and Spain;
- has deeper knowledge about the newer developments in Spanish-speaking countries;
- is able to analyse wider regional problems, based on their coverage in media, literature, art and cinema;
- establish interdisciplinary connections between the educational and the selected subject fields of study;
- is independently able to search, chose and modify from different sources authentic current materials for mediating territorial and cultural knowledge;
- has developed pair and group work skills.
