Course aims
To deepen students' knowledge of the possibilities of analyzing a literary work; to reflect on how cultural knowledge affects reading; to explore the application possibilities of reading models based on fiction written in Spanish; to understand the difficulties of literary translation.
Brief description of the course
The course has a seminar format and actively involves the learner. The following topics are discussed: reading comprehension skills and literature in a foreign language class; literature, its nature, functions and relationships with other fine art (for example, migration of themes and motifs); literature as a part of cultural memory; literary analysis and reading models. The main focus is on reading and analyzing contemporary literature written in Spanish; its latest tendencies, its place in world literature and its translation into Estonian are discussed. The student gets the opportunity to translate fiction fragments themself and discuss the result in the seminar.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows different reading models for literary texts;
- can independently analyze fiction according to these models;
- has a deeper knowledge of Spanish-language literature and its translation history;
- can discuss the problems related to the translation of fiction, based on their own experience;
- has developed pair and group work skills;
- can express their views in an argumentative and linguistically correct manner, both orally and in writing.
