Course aims
Enhance students' knowledge of the possibilities of using complete texts or text excerpts in Italian literature for learning the Italian language. Study the use of literature in language learning from three perspectives: linguistic, methodological and motivational. Familiarize oneself with reading strategies and types of reading tasks. Understand the problems associated with the translation of literature.
Brief description of the course
The course takes place in seminar format and actively involves the learners. Discussions will revolve around the following topics: literature in foreign language classes and text comprehension skills; the nature, functions, and relationships of literature with other art forms (such as the migration of themes and motifs); the literary work as a carrier of linguistic creativity and cultural memory. Students will learn about reading strategies – selective reading, general reading, deep reading, creative reading – and how to create reading assignments. Literary translation as a method of language learning will also be addressed. Students will have the opportunity to translate literary excerpts themselves and discuss the results in the seminar. The main focus is on contemporary Italian literature.
