Course aims
The student:
• Is familiar with the key cultural trends of the 20th and 21st centuries and can identify and compare them across different media;
• Understands the main analytical methods used for various media (literature, film, visual culture, etc.) and can approach contemporary cultural phenomena from an interdisciplinary perspective;
• Develops creativity, collaboration skills, and self-expression abilities.
Brief description of the course
Analysis of Literature and Audiovisual Artworks.
An overview of key contemporary cultural trends. Examination of a selected topic across different media. Understanding cultural connections between Romance-speaking countries.
The course will be conducted in the following formats:
• Lecture-seminars
• Individual assignments
• Group work
• Collaborative project
• Joint seminars (in Estonian)
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- analyzes the adaptation of a literary or audiovisual work into another form, genre, or medium (e.g., transforming a text into a play, film, comic, video game, etc.);
- contextualizes these adaptations within specific artistic movements or schools of thought;
- produces a written paper or an oral presentation on the topic in the relevant field-specific language;
- applies knowledge creatively in an interdisciplinary project (e.g., adapting a painting into a poem, drafting a manifesto for a particular artistic movement, creating a podcast, engaging in creative writing, etc.).
