Course aims
The student has a good understanding of the major historical and cultural periods of Spain, Italy, and France; is able to discuss their distinctive features and compare them both among themselves and across different regions. They can independently and collaboratively research and present topics covered in the course, appropriately summarize relevant texts, and critically assess them as sources. Additionally, the student recognizes the role of history in contemporary society and culture.
Brief description of the course
The early history of Italy, Spain, and France from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment; the mindsets, cultural contacts, and mutual influences that characterize different periods.
The course is conducted in the following format: lectures-seminars, individual assignments and group discussions, group work.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- describes topics from the early history of Spain, Italy and France in a comparative manner;
- engages in well-reasoned discussions on the transmission and evolution of societal ideas;
- is able to plan and collaboratively execute a project related to a chosen topic;
- pronounces and writes familiar Spanish, Italian, and French names correctly;
- evaluates the reliability of information and historical sources;
- summarizes academic texts in Estonian.
