Course aims
To give an overview of the literature of the Romance countries in the 19th century, during the period of the romantic, realist and symbolist movements.
Brief description of the course
Romanticism in Europe and in the Romance countries: Mm de de Stael, Chauteaubriand, Hugo, Sand, Musset; Foscolo; Manzoni and the Italian historical novel. Romantic poetry: Lamartine, Vigny, Hugo; Foscolo, Leopardi; Duke de Rivas (Saavedra), Garcia Guiterrez etc; Realism: Balzac, Stendhal, Mérimée, Flaubert, Maupassant. Spanish historical novel. French naturalism and Zola; Italian verism and Verga. The Parnasse school and art-for-art's-sake (Gautier). Symbolism: Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé and it's influence on Italian poetry. Decadentism: Huysmans; D’ Annunzio. Spanish ’98 generation. Romanticism, realism and symbolism in art.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge of the cultural history of the Romance countries in the 19th century.
Capacity to understand the literatures of the Romance countries in the context of European culture.
Ability to analyse the literature and art created according to the main rules and tendencies of romanticism, realism and symbolism.
