Brief description of the course

The course addresses the main trends in Estonian literature and their connections with historical and cultural contexts, focusing on selected periods, authors or thematic areas. Students read examples of Estonian literary texts in English and discuss them in seminars.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- describes the main development trends, authors and themes of Estonian literature, drawing on the texts and background knowledge covered in the course;
- is familiar with selected major works of Estonian literature and relates them at a basic level to their historical and cultural context;
- describes and interprets Estonian literary texts read in English translation, taking into account their thematic and poetic specificities;
- participates in discussion in English on Estonian literature and expresses their observations and views on the texts discussed.
