Course aims

To create a systematic overview of Estonian syntax.

Brief description of the course

The course covers the following topics. Ways of describing syntactic structure. Historical and present day description of Estonian syntax. Sentence and their constituent parts, grammatical relationships, main types of sentences. Basic structure of a context-free elementary clause: parts of a sentence; non-part elements of sentences; phrases, their types, structure and syntactic functions. Communicative and nominative modality and their formation in the sentence, communicative sentence types. Syntactic processes: ellipsis, coordination, substitution. Information structure of the sentence and word order. Secondary constructions and subordinate clauses, their classification and status in sentences.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- interprets and uses terminology correctly;
- has knowledge of the Estonian language syntax, sentence structure and functions of constituents;
- can define key terms.
