Course aims
To provide the student with an opportunity to prepare for the professional examination for language editors by reviewing and systematising the knowledge acquired during the minor field of study in accordance with the tasks of a language editor, and by developing and refining editing skills.
Brief description of the course
The course covers language norms and the professional tasks of a language editor and introduces the main reference materials used in editing work. Attention is given to the initial assessment of an editing assignment, text editing, and working with laid-out texts. Students practise correcting spelling errors, evaluating text structure, and taking into account text function and target audience. The course also focuses on identifying inconsistencies in tables of contents and in content, adhering to stylistic consistency, fact-checking, verifying text authenticity and the accuracy of quotations, checking and standardising terminology, and complying with formatting requirements. The course also includes proofreading.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is prepared for the professional examination for language editors;
- masters the working methods of a language editor and possesses the knowledge and skills required for linguistic editing and proofreading.
