Course aims

Develop a skill to summarize English texts on popular science and science in Estonian and give an adequate assessment of the summary. To acquire the ability to recognize terms in the text and to find suitable matches for them. Learn about the opportunities and risks associated with machine translation and AI.

Brief description of the course

Summary translation process. Highlighting important information. Review. Terminological problems and their resolution. Machine translation and artificial intelligence. Summarizing multiple sources. Referencing.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- knows all the steps in the summary translation process and can meaningfully use the knowledge;
- knows the appropriate language usage for summarizing both popular science texts and academic texts;
- can write a summary that is logically structured, clear, and coherent in content;
- is able to identify terms in the text and find target language terms;
- can compile a summary from multiple sources and correctly refer to the sources;
- knows the possibilities and risks of machine translation and AI;
- can make an adequate assessment of the summary.
