Course aims

To develop skills for using different data sources, incl. dictionaries, electronic databases etc., to develop general understanding of the basic terms, problems and principles of usage of terminology.
To develop the skills of reviewing different (written and spoken) texts, skills of briefing and compilation of minutes of meetings and memos.

Brief description of the course

Overview the basic problems of terminology, the nature of the term. Main types of dictionaries, principles of compilation of different dictionaries. The combination of mono- and bilingual dictionaries. Databases and the various types of data sources.
Skills of reviewing, presentation of facts, highlighting significant information. Different types of reviews: minutes, memos, and briefing.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of the basic problems of terminology and is able to distinguish between the term and the concept;
- can use different dictionaries and other information sources;
- knows the principles of both oral and written references;
- analyzes the success and contribution of oneself and one's course mates in acquiring the course material.
