Course aims
To acquire necessary theoretical and practical skills for editing non-belletristic translated texts up to the medium level of complexity (instructions, popular science and newspaper articles).
Brief description of the course
The course is based on English-Estonian translated texts. To complete the course succsessfully the student who signs on the course should have at least B2 English (reading) and C2 Estonian (writing) skills as well as basic editing skills.
The course gives an overview of the specific characteristics of editing translated texts compared to editing original texts and also insight into resources to help the editing process of translated texts. During the course the student learns how to avoid the structural influence of the source language to the translated text; how to distinguish the style of the author of the text form the typical structure of the source language; how to spot foreignisms as well as translation errors and avoid them; how to take into consideration the wider cultural backgorund and social context of the source text and make the text comperhensible to the target language reader.
Texts of various content and complexity are edited, incl. Instructions, popular science articles as well as newspaper articles. The student also learns how to work with terminology and terminology recources and use adequate functional vocabylary and style.
The introductory lectures are followed by practical editing: for every lecture the student has to edit a text given in the previous lecture as an individuaal work. During the lectures the edited texts are discussed and corrected.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student is familiar with the special characteristics of the editing of translated texts, recognises the influence of the source language structure on Estonian texts and is able to avoid it. The student is able to spot the cultural and social distinctions appearing in the source text that could prevent the reader of a source language to understand the context and is familiar with means that can be used to make the text perspicous for the target language reader. The student is also conversant with additional materials (both traditional and online materials) that are necessary in the process of editing translated texts and can evaluate the functional and terminologycal adequacy of the translated text. The student is able to edit translated texts up to medium level of complexity adequate for publishing.
