Course aims
The overview is given about the history and present of the Estonian language planning. The objective is to develop skills in identifying and avoiding language usage that deviates from the structure of Estonian, to provide an overview of the principles of the treatment of names.
Brief description of the course
The concept of a common language, dialects, written language and special language, their relationships and the reciprocal effect in the development of modern Estonian. The standardised code (written language) of common language and terminology, and lexical and grammatical features desired/rejected by correct usage. Phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical norms. Orthography and cases of correct usage in the mother tongue. Misuse of nouns and officialese. Foreign influence. Basic concept of the treatment of names. Relevant classifications of names. International treatment of names and Estonia. UN conferences on the treatment of names. Usage of names in written Estonian. Treatment of names in Estonia. Names and the law. Cases of practical usage of names.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The students know which factors influence in language planning and how it practically takes place. Student has necessary knowledge about the history and present of the Estonian language planning. Knows basic sources of correct usage.
