Course aims
To provide pooprtunites for a comprehension of how Baltic peoples and tribes emerged; of emergence and developments of Baltic languages; material culture, ethnography, contacts with neighbouring languages.
Brief description of the course
Introduction. The term „Baltic“. First mentionings of Baltic tribes. Ancient Balts. Toponymics and hydronymics as a key to the ancient history of the Balts. Old Baltic culture and mythology. Baltic tribes (Yotvingians, Prussians, Semgalians, Selians, Latgalians, Kurshians). Lithuania’s name and territory. Typological characteristics of Lithuanian. Lithuanian dialects. Typological characteristics of Latvian. Latvian dialects. Baltic-Slavic and Baltic-Germanic language contacts. Baltic-Finnic language contacts. Centres of research and studes of Baltic languages and cultures.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Students have a general understanding of emergence of the Baltic peoples; are able to provide general characterization of Latvian and Lithuanian; are familar with Latvian and Lithuanian dialects calssification and dialect borders; are able to name centers of research on Baltic languages and know important researchers’ contribution; have an understanding of mutual impact of Baltic and neighboring lanuages.
