Course aims
Opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills of text-linguistics is given to continue with studies of linguistics, interpreter, language editor, or Estonian teacher training. For students of languages and cultures or advertising and imagology, relevant background is provided for to knowingly analyze texts for academic and other purposes.
Brief description of the course
Active lectures: Language as a system and function. Text and discourse. Text and code. Situational analysis. The seven standards of textuality: cohesion; coherence; intentionality; acceptability; informativity; situationality; intertextuality. Constitutive versus regulative principles: efficiency; effectiveness; appropriateness. Culture-specific features of communicational behaviour and non-verbal codes. Aesthetic and pragmatic orientation of texts. Oral and written texts. Narrative, descriptive, and persuasive text-sorts, or pregenres. Poetry, prose, drama. Situated and embedded genres. Composition and cohesiveness. Ideological analysis. Texts in certain discourse and discourse within a text. Seminars: practical analysis on media, fiction, public service, etc. texts.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
A student
- is able to differentiate between genres, their compositional and linguistic features, norms and individualities;
- is able to interpret ideational and interpersonal meanings, reference and clues, using support of the visual.
