Course aims
Focus subject of philology, the objective of which is to provide an overview of regional, social and stylistic variations of language. Basic concepts addressing language variation and the functions of different lects are introduced. The course provides background knowledge about in-depth studies on language and literature.
Brief description of the course
Linguistic variation, reasons for its existence. Regional and social dialects. Slang. Idiolect. Sociolinguistic markers and indicators. Sociolinguistic parameters (social belonging, age, gender, level of education etc.). Relevant trends in sociolinguistic research (Labov, Trudgill, Milroy and others). Bilingualism and diglossia. Code switching. Language planning. Stylistic variation. Functional styles: official style, unofficial style, journalistic, scientific and literary style. Grammatical means in the service of stylistic variation: theme-rheme, modality, transitivity. Figures of speech and sound.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
A student has a good overview of and basic knowledge in
- regional, social, stylistic and individual varieties of language;
- functions of language use in different fields, registers and styles;
- variation of linguistic norms and codes of texts.
(S)he is able to apply his/her knowledge and skills as a student of languages, literature and cultures as well as a researcher of the fields.
