Course aims
To prepare students for independent research and writing Master’s thesis. To support the process of writing of the Master’s thesis till its successful defence. To offer the prerequisites for the successful formulation of research question. To offer the opportunity for the acquisition of skills for argumentation and for the oral and written presentation of research results.
Brief description of the course
During the course, students will become familiar with the key information resources essential for writing a Master’s thesis. They will learn how to plan the research process, formulate coherent research questions, and structure their work effectively. As part of the course, students will develop an outline of their thesis and will write selected chapters. Seminars will provide a forum for the discussion of these draft chapters, as well as theoretical texts relevant to each student's research project. The course will also introduce the principles of academic writing and the conventions of scholarly style. In preparation for the final stage of their studies, the defence process will be introduced.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to demonstrate knowledge of key information resources relevant to the preparation of a master's thesis and apply them effectively in academic research;
- is able to plan a research project by formulating appropriate research questions and clearly defining the aims and problems of the study;
- is able to compose and develop chapters of the master's thesis in accordance with the conventions of academic writing;
- is able to participate in scientific debate and presents and defends his/her views logically;
- is able to critically analyse and evaluate both their own and peers’ thesis drafts, demonstrating constructive academic feedback skills;
- is able to engage in scholarly discourse by defending arguments in a logically structured manner;
- is able to apply formal requirements for the formatting and structure of a master's thesis in accordance with institutional guidelines;
- Demonstrate understanding of the thesis defence process and prepare adequately for its academic and procedural components.
