Course aims
The course is specifically designed for future class teachers, aiming to provide the necessary theoretical foundation for teaching Estonian orthography, lexicology, morphology, and syntax, as well as to develop the ability to use correct written language.
Brief description of the course
This course is designed for students specializing in primary education and provides an overview of Estonian language morphology, lexicology, syntax, and orthography.
Morphology: The course covers the basic concepts of morphology, word classes, morphological categories, stem alternations, and declension and conjugation paradigms.
Lexicology: It explores the enrichment of vocabulary, native and borrowed words, lexical and semantic relationships (synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, homonymy, paronymy), language functions and lexicon, text and word choice, lexicography, and word formation (compound words, derivation).
Syntax: The course examines sentence structure (sentence members, sentence types), sentence components and their construction (phrases, clauses, nominalization, subordinate clauses), word order in sentences, and punctuation.
Orthography: It provides an overview of orthographic principles, spelling, capitalization, the notation of numbers, abbreviation, and rules for writing words together or separately.
The lecture-based format is complemented by ongoing practical work, where students apply the skills learned.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is acquainted with main concepts and terms of morphology and syntax, can analyze the structure of morphological forms (word class of a word, inflectional class, stem alternations, suffixes);
- can create different morphological forms, can analyze the structure of Estonian clause.
- know the principles of Estonian orthography and can use correct Estonian;
- has knowledge of the different layers of vocabulary, understands lexical relationships, is familiar with the branches of lexicology, and knows the principles of word formation.
