Course aims
To create a basis for understanding the main problems in terminology, for using various sources of lexicon, for further research in terminology
Brief description of the course
An overview of main concepts in lexicology, the essence of terms, main problems in terminology.
Classification of dictionaries, main principles of compilation of different dictionaries, main tendencies in dictionaries (in vocabulary).
Lexicography: paper and web dictionaries, types of dictionaries and their quality; combining mono- and bilingual dictionaries (for editing, translation, editing translated texts), language technology: databases as extentions of dictionaries, collections of data about real usage of words, free software for data analysis.
Using different corpora in research. Possibilities to adapt internet-resources to corpora.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
After the course the student:
• is familiar with the terminology and knows main concepts in lexicography;
• has an overview of principles of compilation and stages of compilation of different dictionaries, of language applications used in modern lexicography;
• is aware of general and electronic resources of the Estonian language and is able to critically evaluate and purposefully use them;
• is able to avoid the reliance to editor’s own, subjective language sense while working as a language editor.
