Course aims
This core course of the study programme „Estonian philology“ gives an overview of the most important phonetic and morphological shifts in the history of Estonian. Mostly, the traditional historical-comparative framework is applied. The research methods, limits and alternatives of the framework are introduced during the first two lectures.
Brief description of the course
Research on historical grammar. The development of Estonian. History of konsonants and vowels. Sound changes and analogy. Stem alternations. Noun and verb paradigm. Declinations and conjugations.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
The student is familiar with the important changes in Estonian grammar and is able to use this knowledge in teaching modern Estonian.
