Course aims
Compulsory subject of Estonian philology, which connects the courses of phonetics and phonology and is a prerequisite for the systematic course of Estonian morphology. The course provides basic knowledge of systemising and interpretation of phonetic facts and proficiency in applying it to practical phonetic and phonological analysis.
Brief description of the course
Orthographies and transcriptions. Phonetic and phonological transcription, specified orthography. Letters and diacritics. The phonological interpretation of segmental and prosodic components of the sound system. Syllable types. Stress foot. Theory of segmental quantity degree. The phonological interpretations of Estonian prosody based on syllable and sequence of two syllables. The phonology of the Estonian vowel system, consonant system and semivowels. Boundary markers and morpheme-bound consonant clusters. Concept of centring language. The concept of phonological correlation: palatalization correlation in Estonian written language and dialects. Neutralisation. The essence of quantity degree: criticism of the theory of segmental quantity degree, syllabic quantity degree and stress foot quantity degree, word quantity degree as a conventional term.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is acquainted with main concepts and terms of phonetics and phonology;
- has an overview of Phonetic and Phonological system of Estonian language.
