Course aims
With increasing recognition of their importance across a broad range of disciplines, this course provides an introduction to systematic review methods. The course aims to demonstrate the importance of reviewing the literature systematically regardless of whether or not the desired end product is a formal systematic review.
Brief description of the course
This course introduces evidence review methods ranging from meta-analysis (statistical review of quantitative evidence) through to meta-ethnography (synthesis of qualitative evidence through abstraction). Several forms of thematic content analysis appropriate for the description of theory, concepts and methods will also be introduced. Participants will mostly work individually focusing on methodological approaches, review techniques and tools appropriate for their own research question.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- describes the distinguishing characteristics of a systematic review and identify the main sources of such reviews;
- summarises the main strengths and limitations of systematic review methods;
- recognises appropriate methodological approaches, review techniques and tools of potential applicability to the student’s academic discipline;
- demonstrates the application of systematic methods of literature review to a research topic of the student’s own selection;
- analyses critically and synthesise the findings of key research studies that address the student’s research question.
