Course aims
To give an overview of key issues of contemporary Estonian society and indicate how these issues are related to population development. To provide analytical foundation for understanding the regularities of population development and their applicability for concrete planning decisions. To support the skills of using publicly available population databases for solving analytical tasks.
Brief description of the course
The course begins with the basics of population development demonstrating how the reproductive processes shape population’s size and structure in a long run. The transformation of reproduction and modernisation in different spheres of society will be treated as parallel developments. Focussing on Estonian society several key issues will be addressed, including household structure, family, labour market, health system, education, population settlement structure, issues related to in- and out-migration.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the basics of population development (including the ability to distinguish characteristics of contemporary reproductive regime);
- recognises the key issues of contemporary Estonian society and is able to relate the issues to the context of population development;
- recognises which possibilities and limitations a population poses on planning decisions;
- has gained experience of using public population databases for carrying out specific analytical tasks.
