Course aims
The course belongs to introductory courses in BA level, recommended to senior year students, primarily in the field of social sciences. The aim is to equip students with basic knowledge on population development, support the acquisition of skills (including digital skills) related to the use of population data, and support developing analytical skills in the area of population studies.
Brief description of the course
Overview of the main concepts of population studies, basic summary measures, sources of population data, and statistical databases (eSTAT, UN, Eurostat etc). The central topic is population replacement and related population processes (fertility, mortality, migration). The demographic transition framework is used to conceptualize population development, and recognise population-related limitations or possibilities. Contact hours include lectures, seminars and workshops. Independently students work with literature, calculate basic measures, and search, present and interpret population facts.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows basic concepts and has primary knowledge on main theoretical foundations of population studies;
- is able to describe changes taking place in population processes (fertility, mortality, migration), population structure and –dynamics;
- is able to calculate and interpret summary measures;
- orientates in main sources of population data;
- is able to search population facts from statistical databases, as well as present and interpret this information.
