Course aims
This course will provide basic knowledge of classical Chinese for the better use of modern Chinese.
Brief description of the course
During 2 semesters (once a week) 24 classical Chinese texts will be introduced, most of which are stories about idiomatic phrases and ancient fables, with vivid and interesting plots. In each lesson, there are 3 to 4 items of "Classical Chinese for Modern Use" through which the value of classical language is demonstrated; 2 to 4 grammar points to differentiate the ancient and current language usage and to cultivate the students’ feeling for ancient Chinese; two Chinese character radicals to help improve students’ skills of reading characters as well as passages; and one short article on Chinese culture or language to lead students into a broad world of learning.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
To understand the development and background of Chinese idioms;
To differentiate ancent and modern usage of Chinese language;
To understand the meanings of radicals.
