Course aims
The objective of the course is to create possibility and develop students’ skills in understanding the concepts of refugee protection and the phenomenon of “climate refugees” as well as the applicable hard law and soft law governing displacement related to the impacts of disasters and climate change.
Brief description of the course
The course covers the international legal framework governing refugee protection; internally displaced persons (IDPs); regional approaches to refugee protection; the principle of non-refoulement; climate migration; soft law instruments.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the main principles of refugee law, including the principle of non-refoulement;
- knows which international and regional courts and/or UN institutions are able to enforce the rights of refugees;
- understands and is able to explain the standards of protection in different regional systems, particularly the European system;
- knows the limitations of the current system of protection in light of displacement related to the impacts of disasters and climate change.
