Course aims
The course aims to
- give knowledge about the structure and and jurisdiction of the most important international courts and tribunals;
- develope the skills of solving cases by solving hypothetical case scenarios;
- develope the skills of legal drafting and compiling a legal memorandum;
- improve the ability to provide reasoned opinions and analyse the counter-arguments of the opposing side;
- develope understanding of the meaning of the various roles in international legal proceeding;
The students will gain the skills to participate in moot court as an advocate and skillfully representing clients in a fictitious legal dispute; and skills to represent the University in international moot court competitions abroad.
Brief description of the course
Writing legal memorandum: selecting legal issues to be covered; choosing arguments in support of a legal issue; ordering issues; format of a legal memorandum; answering questions from the bench; the statement of facts; summary of the argument; point headings; synthesizing the law and precedents from the client’s perspective; arguing your facts; rebutting opposing arguments and authority; writing the conclusion; proper citation format.
Oral pleadings: preparing and selecting the arguments; questions by the court; citation of authority; speaking style; prayer for relief.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge and understanding of the structure and jurisdiction of international courts and tribunals;
- can see, word and solve legal problems in connection to an international legal case;
- is able to find the legal sources, cases and theoretical views necessary to solve legal issues;
- has acquired practical skills necessary for participation in court proceedings and compiling procedural documents;
- is able to compose necessary procedural documents.
- has acquired public speaking skills and organizational skills which enable them to participate in international moot court competitions
