Course aims
To develop ability to design and prototype conversational AI systems by applying principles of speech-based human–technology interaction and purposefully integrating non-speech audio elements.
Brief description of the course
Different forms of conversational AI, including chatbots, social robots, speech assistants, etc. How to design for conversational systems: tone of voice, building trust, personalization / adaptation. Principles of speech-based human-technology interaction. Contemporary tools to prototype conversational AI systems (e.g., voiceflow, Furhat). Non-speech audio (e.g., auditory icons, earcons, music, auralization, soundscapes).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- distinguishes different forms of conversational artificial intelligence, including chatbots, social robots, and speech assistants;
- designs conversational systems, making informed choices regarding tone of voice, trust building, personalization, and adaptation;
- applies principles of speech-based human–technology interaction;
- uses contemporary tools to prototype conversational AI systems;
- integrates non-speech audio elements into a conversational interactive system.
