Course aims
The Medieval town. To introduce medieval history and culture through the lens of a medieval town and in the context of the Baltic region as a part of Europe.
Brief description of the course
This course explores the development, function, and culture of medieval towns, with a particular focus on the Baltic region and Livonia.
Students will engage with medieval history research methods, sources, and literature to understand the urban landscape of the Middle Ages.
Lectures will introduce the economic and social functions of towns, explore the rise of trade networks, and delve into the culture and social life of medieval citizens.
In seminars, the students will practice independent research on a selected topic, as well as presentation and discussion.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a general understanding of the Medieval town as an international phenomenon in European history;
- recognises the different layers of medieval town history and their intertwinings;
- has experience in critically reading historical sources and understands how to work with scientific literature of history research;
- can independently research, present and discuss a selected topic of history.
