Course aims
1) to develop a deeper understanding of the history, development, main topics and methods within the field of environmental history and environmental humanities;
2) to understand the problem of historical scale in environmental discussions;
3) to offer the possibility to discuss and to conduct interdisciplinary research.
Brief description of the course
Environmental history and environmental humanities are a new direction in humanities that aim to
1) understand the role of humans in history from an environmental perspective;
2) strengthen multi-species-approaches;
3) find new sources and interpret them;
4) explore new methods, methodologies and theories within environmental humanities and environmental history,
5) overcome the gap between the humanities and natural sciences.
The lectures are aiming to give a comprehensive overview over the history, development and ongoing discussions within environmental humanities and environmental history. In the seminars the similarities and differences between environmental history and environmental humanities are discussed. In excursions objects and places closely related to the topic are visited and other researchers from within the field will be met.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the differences and similarities between environmental history and environmental humanities
knows the disciplines, topics, sources and methods within environmental humanities and environmental history;
- can name the most important researchers and their works in Estonia;
- is able to analyse on a basic level the interconnections between human societies and their environments by using different primary sources and combining them.
