Course aims
The importance of stereotypes on Baltic German history writing, politics, societies and
arts has been evident from the beginning of Baltic historiography in the Middle Ages. This course introduces the students to the methods of imagology and the main stereotypes in Baltic German history writing. During the seminar we will read and discuss not only theoretical texts but also classic Baltic sources from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries.
By the end of the course, the student will be familiar with the main theories of imagology i in scholarly literature. The student has an understanding of the variety, importance and
history of national, cultural, gender and natural stereotypes in the Baltic German history writing. Thereby the student is able to make use of the method of imagology in her or his own research.
