Course aims
soviet Period in estonia and re-establishing independence (existence of Estonian Republic from 1988 up to present).
Brief description of the course
Joining Russia (SU) and the period of Soviet Estonia (1940-1990). The process of regaining independence 1988-1991. The constitution of 1992. Parties and parlamentarism. Estonia as member of EU and NATO.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
After the course the student will be able to describe the main features of the development of Estonia from the second half of the 19th century up to now. He/she can define the problems of an independent state in the framework of Estonias geopolitical position and in the framework of the interests of the great powers in the world. Will be able to reflect the basic events in the history of Estonia and employ the knowledge in assessing the decision-making of the local rulers. Is able to compare the developement of Estonia with that of the other Eastern European small countries. Formulates the strategies for the future of Estonia as an independent state taking into consideration the historical experience
