Course aims
The aim of this course is to describe the main characteristics of Estonian political, cultural and social history since the Livonian War (1558) up to the beginning of World War I (1914).
Brief description of the course
Introduction to the modern history of Estonia: Old Livonia, the Reformation, the war period of 1558-1661. The Swedish rule, the administrative division. The situation of peasants in the end of the 17th century. Economic and cultural development during the Swedish period. Estonia and Livonia as parts of the Russian Empire in the 18th century. The agrarian reforms of the beginning of the 19th century. Modernisation of the society, economics and cultural life. The 1905 Russian Revolution.
