Course aims

The aim is to provide theoretical knowledge of certain aspects of linguistics; to introduce students to the basic aspects of German lexicology and semantics, different German style levels and sociolinguistics.

Brief description of the course

Definition of language structure and its application. Structure of vocabulary and lexis. Attribution of meaning and relationships between words and their meanings. Phraseology. Changes in lexis and meaning. Lexicography and structure of dictionaries.
Analysis of style levels of German language. Historical development of style levels. Stylistic elements in grammar and lexis.
Definition and classification of variation of German language. Classification and characteristics of sociolects.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- will know the structure of German lexis
- will be able to differentiate between style levels (receptively and productively)
- be able to undertake lexical, lexicographical and stylistic analyses
- will know the principles of sociolinguistics and various German sociolects
