Course aims
The objective of the course is to provide students with a possibility to acquire knowledge of specific qualitative methods in social science and basic skills of self-reflexion as researcher and writing research report based on observation and visual methods.
Brief description of the course
The course consists of lectures (about 50% of auditory meetings) and seminars (about 50% of auditory meetings).
The following topics will be covered during the course: going to the field, observation, writing the observation report;
Types of researcher, roles of different situations, self-reflection.
Types of visual methods and reasons for using them, basics of visual recording (technical and aesthetic); Introductory overview of methodological approaches/methods of analysis: thematic analysis, grounded and multiply grounded theory and narratiives
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows data collection and analysis methods such as the participant observation and visual analyses and has overview of the different methodologies and its’ methods (grounded theory; multi-grounded theory, narrative analyses);
- can understand the explanatory extent of different methods and knows how to use them;
- knows how to combine ethnographic and visual data with other material;
- is aware of the researcher’s influence in case of qualitative approach, able to position him-herself and self-reflection.
