Course aims
To foster understanding of the biological causes of human ageing.
To shape understanding of the anatomical and functional changes taking place in the human body over a person’s lifetime.
To find ways of influencing the ageing process through work/rest regimens, a balanced diet and physical fitness.
Brief description of the course
Gerontology, the science of ageing. Endogenous and exogenous factors in human ageing. The biological nature of the ageing process and contributing factors.
Anatomical and functional changes related to ageing in various organ systems: skeletal, muscular, heart and circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, nervous system, endocrine system and sensory. Senescence in various organ systems. Decline in physical activity due to ageing and resulting decreased physical ability. Role of exercise in slowing the ageing process. Basic principles of selecting appropriate training load and specific exercises for older people. Selecting the right amount of resistance and evaluating whether it is an appropriate level. Applying principles of systematic and age-appropriateness in physical training for the elderly. Self-checks.
Fundamentals of designing a dietary regimen and menu. Analysis of work/rest regimen.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is familiar with the biological underpinnings of the ageing process and the main features of the related changes taking place in the human body;
- is aware of the changes occurring in organ systems by age level and the related decline in functional capacity;
- knows how to apply the optimum amount of physical load based on senescent changes in organ system function;
- is able to design the optimum menu and dietary regimen as well as work/rest regimen.
