Course aims

To give students knowledge about health care and skills to administer first-aid in life-threatening situations and in emergencies. Create opportunities for acquisition and development of knowledge and skills in occupational health and safety, and ability to apply these for the benefit of evaluation of work environment.

Brief description of the course

Professional health and work safety. Professional diseases and accidents.Work environment.Physiological, psychological and biological health s risk factors.Health care.Health care organisatsion and health economics.Correct succession of practical steps in the event of a severe accident. Life threatening bleeding, control of blood loss. Causes of unconsciousness and their quick assessment. Resuscitation. First aid for suffocation, fainting and shock, wounds, electrical injuries, burns, poisoning, chemical burns, fractures, sprains, dislocations, bruises, effects of extremes of temperature (heat, frost), sudden child birth. Teaching of bandaging. Carrying and transport of victims. Psychological first aid.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has knowledge and skills on first aid techniques applicable in case of emergency;
- is able cope in occupational health care system, evaluate the work environment and its influence on health, and propose possible solutions fro problems;
- has knowledge in occupational health care and safety and can apply these in case needed;
- can maintain ones performance, value required work conditions
